Information:
During normal operating conditions, sleeve bearings require little maintenance. To ensure reliable operation, the oil level, and the amount of oil leakage, should be checked regularly.Oil Level
The oil level of a self-lubricated sleeve bearing must be checked regularly. The correct oil level is in the middle of the oil sight glass. However, if the oil level is within the oil sight glass, the level is acceptable. When necessary, refill with a suitable lubricant. Refer to Operation & Maintenance Manual, SEBU8852, "Bearing Plate" for specific details on suitable lubricants.Bearing Temperatures
Bearing temperatures are measured by PT-100 resistance temperature detectors (RTD).Bearing temperatures rising above the alarm limit can be caused by increased bearing losses, or by a decrease in the cooling capacity. Either of the two conditions can indicate a problem in the motor, or in the lubrication system. For this reason, always closely the motor, and the lubrication system, should always be monitored. There are many reasons for abnormal bearing temperatures. If a temperature rise is followed by an increase in vibration levels, the problem might also be related to the motor alignment.Refer to Special Instruction, REHS9791, "Installation Instructions for CN Electric Motors" for more detailed information. If damage to the bearing shells is suspected, the bearings will need to be dismantled and checked.Lubrication of Sleeve Bearings
Caterpillar CN motors are equipped with sleeve bearings with long service life.Long service life will only be realized if the following conditions are met:
The motor lubrication functions continuously.
The oil type and quality are as per Caterpillar recommendations.
The oil change instructions are strictly followed.Lubrication Oil Temperatures
Correct lubrication oil temperature is essential in keeping the bearing at the correct operating temperature. On motors equipped with an oil supply, poor operation of the oil cooler or heater, and incorrect oil flow, will cause oil temperature problems.Correct lubrication oil temperature is also essential in ensuring sufficient lubrication, and the correct viscosity of the lubrication oil.For all bearings, the correct oil quality and quantity must be checked whenever temperature problems appear.Refer to the "Recommended Control Values for Lubricating Oil" and the "Oil Qualities" sections of this document for more information.Note: The minimum ambient temperature for starting a motor (without oil heater) is 0° C (32° F).Control of Lubricants
During the first year of operation, samples of the lubricating oil after 1000, 2000, and 4000 equivalent operating hours should be taken. The oil samples should be sent to Caterpillar S O S for analysis. Based on the results, a suitable oil change interval can be recommended. After the first oil change, the oil may be analyzed at the middle, and the end, of the oil change interval.Recommended Control Values for Lubricating Oils
The lubricating oil should be checked as follows:
Visually, regarding color, turbidity, and deposits in a test bottle. The oil must be clear or negligibly turbid (the turbidity may not be caused by water)
Water content must not exceed 0.2%
Original viscosity must be maintained within a 15% tolerance
Oil should be free from debris, and the oil cleanliness must match ISO 4406 class 18/15, or NAS 1638 class 9 standards
