Operation
To ensure trouble-free running, a motor must be looked after and carefully supervised. Before starting up the motor, ensure that the following list of actions is performed:
The bearings are greased or filled with oil to the correct level.
The cooling system is functioning.
No maintenance is ongoing.
The personnel and equipment associated with the motor are ready to start up the machine.Note: Refer to Special Instruction, REHS9791, "Caterpillar® C N Electric Motors Installation and Removal Guide" for motor start-up procedures. If any abnormal operating conditions such as elevated temperature, excessive vibration or noise are noticed, shut down the motor. Take corrective actions to address the abnormal conditions.Normal Operating Conditions
Note: The motor may have hot surfaces when running.Motors sold by Caterpillar are individually designed to operate in normal operation conditions according to IEC or NEMA standards, customer specifications, and internal Caterpillar standards.Operation conditions, such as maximum ambient temperature and maximum operating altitude, are specified on the motor nameplate. The foundation must be free from external vibration, and the surrounding air shall be free of dust, salt, and corrosive gases or substances.Note: The safety precautions found in the "Safety Instructions" at the beginning of this manual must always be observed.Number of Starts
The allowed number of consecutive starts, for a direct on line supplied machines, depends on the load characteristics, the motor type, and the motor design. Among the specific load characteristics to consider are the torque curve vs rotational speed, and the inertia.Too many, or too heavily loaded starts will cause abnormally high temperatures and stresses on the motor. Such conditions will accelerate the aging of the motor and result in an abnormally short service life, or even a complete motor failure.Refer to Special Instruction, REHS9791, "Caterpillar® C N Electric Motors Installation and Removal Guide", for information about the allowed number of consecutive or annual starts. Also, the load characteristics of the application are needed to determine the starting frequency. As a guideline, the maximum number of starts in a typical application is 1000 starts per year.A counter system for controlling the number of starts should be used, and maintenance intervals should be determined based on equivalent operating hours. Refer to Operation & Maintenance Manual, SEBU8852, "Maintenance Program".Note: The safety precautions found in the "Safety Instructions" at the beginning of this manual must always be observed.Supervision
Operating personnel must inspect the motor at regular intervals. Operating personnel must listen, feel, and smell the motor and all associated equipment, to obtain a feeling for normal operating conditions. The object of the supervision inspection is to familiarize personnel with the equipment while everything is in good working order. That experience will aid in the future detection of problems and troubleshooting.Normal supervision of operation includes logging of operating data such as load, temperatures, and vibrations. The logged data then becomes a useful basis for maintenance and service. Two good rules to follow are listed below:
During the first 200 hours of operation, supervision should be intensive. Temperatures of bearings and windings, load, current, cooling, lubrication, and vibrations, must be checked frequently.
