D349 Industrial And Marine EnginesReports show that it is possible, in some applications, for metal particles from the starter pinion and the flywheel teeth to fall on the magnetic pick-up assembly in the flywheel housing. These particles can cause the pick-up to give a wrong indication of engine rpm and permit the engine rpm to vary (change).
If this is a problem on your engines, the magnetic pick-up can be moved to a different location on the top of the flywheel housing. Use the procedure that follows to change the location of the magnetic pick-up.
1. Machine a new hole in the flywheel housing as shown in the illustration.2. Install the 3N3515 Adapter in the new hole.3. Install the magnetic pick-up until it just makes contact with the flywheel.4. Turn the magnetic pick-up back out 1/2 turn or 0.56 to 0.76 mm (.022 to .030").5. Tighten the locknut to a torque of 70 14 N m (50 10 lb ft).6. Install a 3J3429 Plug in the original location of the pick-up.
