Location of the position sensor for the angle of the machine articulation
The view is from the left side of machine and the covers are removed.
(3) Articulation angle sensor 1
(4) Articulation angle sensor 2
(2) Mechanical linkage Two articulation angle signals are required for correct operation of the articulation of the machine. Either the two separate sensors or the dual output sensor will provide a PWM input to the ECM. This diagnostic code is associated with the machine "articulation angle sensor signal 2" connected to each ECM at J2-17. The FMI 14 diagnostic code is recorded when the ECM determines that the signal from articulation angle sensor 1 does not match the signal from articulation angle sensor 2. The technician should use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (CAT ET) to monitor the signals of both sensors to check for a mismatch in the output of the sensors. The sensor is a PWM sensor that operates at a frequency of approximately 500 Hz. When the machine is in the neutral position, the input of the duty cycle from the sensor to the ECM is approximately 57% for the model 16M, approximately 54% for the model 14M and approximately 52% for all other models. When the machine is articulated to the full left position, the duty cycle will be approximately 29% for the model 14M and approximately 33% for all other models. When the machine is articulated to the full right position, the duty cycle will be approximately 75% for the model 16M, approximately 79% for the model 14M and approximately 74% for all other models. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below:
The mechanical linkage for the position sensor is not functioning correctly.
The sensor needs calibrated.
The sensor has failed.
The ECM has failed. An ECM failure is unlikely.Note: Before performing this procedure, ensure that there are no active CID 0041 diagnostic codes for the 8 VDC sensor power supply. Ensure that the power supply for the angle sensor is correct.Note: Before performing this procedure, inspect the harness connectors that are involved in the circuit. Poor connections can often be the cause of a problem in an electrical circuit. Verify that all connections in the circuit are clean, that all connections are secure and that all connections are in good condition. If a problem with a connection is found, correct the problem and verify that this diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Note: The following test procedure may create other diagnostic codes. Ignore these created diagnostic codes and clear the diagnostic codes when the original diagnostic code has been corrected.Test Step 1. CHECK THE MECHANICAL LINKAGE
Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine.Do not disconnect the lock link until the machine is made operational and the commissioning procedure is completed.
Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position.
