This Special Instruction provides the procedure that is necessary for installing extra engine mounting groups onto the 3612 Engine and onto the 3616 Engine. One mounting group is added to each side of the engine. The additional mounting groups are required in order to reduce bending of the cylinder block. Bending of the cylinder block may result in cracking of the oil pan in some applications.This instruction requires the arc welding of a mild steel mounting plate to the structural steel of the engine's mounting base. Follow the guidelines that are provided in Caterpillar Tools And Shop Products Guide, NENG2500, "Welding Products".If the oil pan was cracked prior to installing the additional engine mounting groups, repair the oil pan. Follow the procedures that are provided in Guidelines for Reuse and Salvage Information, SEBF8160, "Procedure To Salvage Oil Pan Assemblies For 3500 And 3600 Families Of Engines".Do not perform any procedure that is outlined in this Special Instruction until the entire Special Instruction has been read and understood.Required Materials Per Engine

Before you install the mounting groups, measure the crankshaft deflection. For additional information, refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, SENR3593, "Crankshaft Deflection (Bend)". Record the specific amount of deflection, placement of the deflection, and the direction of the deflection. This will provide a reference for determining the movement of the cylinder block during the welding procedure.Location of the Extra Mounting Groups
