CASE A 3P2410 - Caterpillar

The 5P8690 Fixture Assembly (1) and 5P8691 Socket (2) can be used in the reconditioning procedure for the 5M4169 Cam Follower Assemblies used in the above engines. The procedure needed for tool use and reconditioning are given in this instruction.Disassembly Of Cam Follower
(1) Either fasten 5P8690 Fixture Assembly (1) to a work bench with bolts or hold the fixture base in a vise as shown. Put follower (2) in position on the fixture with hole (A) up, as shown. Pull down and hold handle (3) so rod (4) goes through hole (A) to put spring (5) in compression.(2) Use the 5P8691 Socket with a 1/2" drive ratchet and remove gear (6). Remove plug (7), spacer (8) and spring (5).(3) Clean and inspect the cam follower. Install new parts for any that show damage or more than normal wear.Assembly Of Cam Follower
(1) Install spring (5), spacer (8) and plug (7) in position in cam follower (2). Use of a 5P1720 Seal Pick will make installation easier. Be sure plug (7) is straight in the bore.(2) Put follower (2) in fixture assembly (1) so hole (A) is up. Pull down on handle (3) so rod (4) goes through hole (A) and plug (7) is below the threads for gear (6). Use 5P8691 Socket (9) to install gear (6) by hand, until it comes in contact with rod (4). Release lever (3) and install gear (6) as far as it can go, then loosen it two full turns. Before the cam followers are installed in an engine, put a good amount of lubrication on the follower and in the follower guides. Make the final adjustment after the cam followers are installed in the engine.
