Engines with 9Y7735, 9Y9497, 9Y6188,4W5739, 4P8167, or 1193782 rod bearings installed by Cat Dealers betweenOctober 1, 1999 and December 31, 2000 are covered by this letter. Thesebearings may be present in 3406, 3408, 3412, C-15, C-16, 3304, 3306, 3176,or C-10 engine models. This includes rod bearings installed in customers?engines prior to the issuance of parts stock PI70008 service letter (December2000 revision). The information supplied in this serviceletter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Donot perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the terminationdate without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst. Certain 9Y7735, 9Y9497, 9Y6188, 4W5739, 4P8167,or 1193782 rod bearings may fail in 3400, 3300, 3176, or C-10 commercialor machine engine applications. These rod bearings are considered to havefailed if they have spun or seized, significant Lead/Tin Overlay (LTO)flaking or "sheeting" is observed during other engine repair, or all 3of the following engine inspection criteria exist;
Multiple S×O× S testresults indicate high Lead readings [such as a Lead (Pb) reading greaterthen 25 ppm or elevated Lead levels that trend upward after the first twooil changes].
A significant number of large LTO flakes are visiblein the oil filter (such as 50 or more LTO particles that are greater than1 mm size).
Other wear metals (especially aluminum) ALSO becomeelevated.
