Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Codes
A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.
B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.
Codes
Result: An associated code is active.
Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.
Result: A code is active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Check the Engine Oil Level
Oil Level
Result: The engine oil is not low.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The engine oil level is low.
Repair: Perform the following procedure:
1. Add engine oil. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Engine Oil" for the recommendations of engine oil.
2. Start the engine. Inspect the exterior of the engine for oil leaks. Repair any oil leaks.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Air System for the Prelube Pump
A. Inspect the following for an air operated prelube pump:
- Air supply pressure
- The lubricator is filled with the correct fluid
- Exhaust restriction
Air System
Result: The air system for the prelube pump is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The air system for the prelube pump is NOT OK.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check the Electrical Power to the Prelube Pump Motor
A. Ensure that the prelube pump motor is wired correctly. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Solenoid Valve - Test" for additional information.
Power
Result: The pump is powered when called for.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
Result: The pump is not receiving power when called for.
Repair: Repair or replace damaged electrical components.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Check for Inadequate Prelubrication Pump Pressure
A. Connect Cat ET.
B. Use Cat ET to monitor the following parameter during the prelube cycle:
- "Engine Oil Pressure"
Note: The ECM must detect an oil pressure of 41 kPa (6 psi) for the programmed "Engine Ready to Start Prelube Duration" before the engine is cranked.
Pressure
Result: The pressure is NOT OK.
Repair: Repair or replace damaged prelubrication pump.
Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.
