Certain Reman Cylinder and Piston Packs built prior to May 8, 2000 need to be removed from dealer Parts Stock. These cylinder and piston packs are for use in various engine and machine applications. The rust preventative/preservative used in packaging the cylinder or piston packs may congeal or solidify after long periods of storage, leaving a sticky or hardened deposit.
Action Required
Inspect the date code on dealer inventory of the following list of Reman cylinder or piston packs.
1) Cylinder or piston packs with a package date code of May 8, 2000 or later (newer) should be returned to dealer stock.2) Cylinder or piston packs with a package date code prior to May 8, 2000 (older) need to be removed from dealer stock and inspected. Explanation of date coding:
The date code is located on the tamper resistant part number label attached to the box. The date code is located beneath the part number and is formatted as DDMMYYXXX where D=Day, M=Month, Y=Year, and X=Facility. An example of such a date code is 240400OHL which represents a package manufactured on April 24, 2000 at facility OHL.
Inspection Procedure
1) Open the package and remove the cylinder or piston pack.2) Remove the cylinder or piston pack from the protective bag.3) For cylinder packs, remove the protective plastic cover from the top of the liner.4) Determine if the piston/rings/rod assembly slides freely within the liner or piston pack installation sleeve (do not allow the piston/rings to come out of the liner or sleeve). If the piston/rings/rod assembly does not slide freely (seem stuck) within the liner or sleeve, the cylinder or piston pack must be returned to Caterpillar.5) If the piston/rings/rod assembly slides freely within the liner or piston pack installation sleeve (Step #4), proceed to inspect the cylinder or piston pack for any areas of congealed (solidified, dry, crusty) preservative on the inside of the liner or on the piston/rings. Staining of the liner is permissible. Any sticky or hardened preservative deposits that can be felt with your finger are unacceptable. These cylinder or piston packs must be returned to Caterpillar.Service Claim Allowances
Submit one claim for all Reman cylinder or piston packs, in the above list, that required removal from dealer Parts Stock.
A maximum of 0.1 hr. of labor will be allowed for each cylinder or piston pack opened and inspected.
TEPS/MEPS dealers are reimbursed for recalled Parts Stock by returning the affected Parts Stock to their administering Caterpillar dealer for replacement.
Parts Disposition
U.S. and Canadian Dealers
All cylinder packs and piston packs removed from dealer Parts Stock should be returned in your next core shipment. PLEASE IGNORE THE NORMAL 15 DAY HOLDING PERIOD REQUIREMENT. Cylinder packs should be consolidated in a case by themselves where quantities warrant. Each case of affected cylinder packs and piston packs should be clearly marked "Program Number PI70014". All parts returned must be accompanied by a Core Credit Request (CCR) form and should be marked "warranty". This will ensure 100% core credit for the returned
