Information:

Adjustments for the differential and bevel gear must be made in the order given: Adjustment Procedure for the Bearings for the Bevel Pinion Bearings:1. Install bearings (6) on bevel pinion (12). Install this assembly into carrier assembly (5). Install cage (13) on to carrier assembly (5) with eight bolts (4). Do not install yoke (2), seal (3), or shims (14).2. Tighten bolts (4) evenly while slowly turning bevel pinion (12). Do this until it takes 20 5 lb.in. (23.1 5.8 cm.kg) to turn the bevel pinion. To turn the bevel pinion, drill a hole and make 5/16 in.-18 NC threads in the center of collar (1).3. Install collar to bevel pinion (12) with bolts (10).4. Install bolt in that hole and turn the bolt, collar (1), and bevel pinion (12) with a torque wrench.5. Use a feeler gauge to measure the distance between cage (13) and carrier assembly (5). Be sure the distance is the same at all points around the cage.6. Remove the cage (13). Install a thickness of shims (14) the same as the measured distance. Install the cage again.7. Check the torque needed to turn the bevel pinion again. Add or remove shims until torque is ... 20 5 lb.in.(23.1 5.8 cm.kg)8. Remove cage and install all needed parts. Since the bevel pinion is held stationary in the differential carrier there is no need to check tooth contact. Adjustment Procedure for Free Movement (Backlash) between the Bevel Pinion and the Bevel Gear: Adjustment of the preload on the bearings for the bevel pinion must be made before installing the differential.1. Install the differential assembly in the carrier (5). Tighten nuts (8). Turn rings (7) and (17) until they are in contact with the bearings. At this time, there must be some free movement (backlash) between the bevel gear and bevel pinion.2. Put the differential housing on its side so the bevel gear (11) is on the bottom and the center line for the axles is in a vertical position.3. Install a dial indicator on the carrier assembly (5) to check the backlash between the bevel gear and bevel pinion. To get the correct backlash, loosen one ring (7) or (17) and tighten the other by the same amount. The correct backlash between the bevel gear and bevel pinion is ... .012 to .016 in.(0.30 to 0.41 mm) Adjustment Procedure for Preload of the Differential Bearing: Before starting the adjustment of the bearing preload, be sure nuts (8) are tightened to 800 100 lb.ft. (110.4 13.8 mkg).1. Install a dial indicator so that dimension (9) can be measured.2. Tighten ring (7) until there is a movement shown by the dial indicator. Dimension (9) must not have an increase of more than .005 in. (0.13 mm).3. Again check the backlash between the bevel gear and bevel pinion to be sure it has not changed.(8) Torque for nuts ... 800 100 lb.ft.(110.4 13.8 mkg)(14) 9M3690 Shim thickness ...
