(28) Manual retarder control lever The hydraulic brake system is electronically controlled through the Brake Electronic Control Module (ECM). A gear pump that is mounted to the engine supplies oil pressure to charge the accumulators. The braking system consists of service brakes, secondary brakes, parking brakes, manual retarding, automatic retarder control (ARC), and traction control system (TCS). The service brakes are applied by brake oil pressure that is stored in the service brake accumulator. The secondary brake system combines the use of the parking brake system and the front service brake system. The park brake is used for parking the truck and is applied by placing the direction/speed lever in the PARK position. The park brake is a spring-applied brake and is released by brake oil pressure that is stored in the secondary brake accumulator. The manual retarding, ARC, and TCS are electronically controlled to assist with vehicle braking. The Brake ECM also provides enhanced diagnostics. These diagnostics are available by using onboard memory. Onboard memory stores the diagnostic codes for retrieval at the time of service. Service personnel can use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (Cat ET) service tool for troubleshooting.
