Track-Type Loader:
963C (S/N: 2DS1-UP)
The following procedure should be followed in order to identify an impending failure of the power train of a 963C Track-Type Loader.
Check that 126-1817 Oil Filter is installed on the machine. This is a 5 micron filter.
Take a particle count on the machine. The reading should be ISO 18/15 or better with no particles that are larger than 50 microns. The machine should be flushed by running with a new filter until an acceptable reading is achieved. If the particle count does not decrease within 30 minutes, there may be a problem with the components of the system.Note: Notify Caterpillar if contamination is discovered on a new machine. Include the serial number and SMU hours in the notification.
Evaluate the performance of the charge pumps by checking the charge pressure. The pressure at HIGH IDLE should be 2850 50 kPa (413 7 psi). The pressure at LOW IDLE should be 2600 100 kPa (377 14 psi).If one charge pump has failed, the charge pressure will drop by approximately 1000 kPa (145 psi) during the check at LOW IDLE. If the charge pressure drops below 1000 kPa (145 psi) during the check at LOW IDLE, perform the single stall test in the following step. Charge pressure will be significantly below 2500 150 kPa (363 22 psi) during the stall test, if a charge pump has failed.
Evaluate the performance of the drive pumps and motors.
Perform a single stall test. Lock the brakes in submode 20. Stall the transmission in the Full Forward direction. The drive pressure should be 44000 2000 kPa (6400 300 psi). The engine rpm should be 2130 50. The charge pressure should be 2500 150 kPa (363 22 psi).
Perform a double stall test. Lock the brakes in submode 20. Stall the transmission in the Full Forward direction. Stall the bucket in the rackback position. The drive pressure should be 44000 2000 kPa (6400 300 psi). The engine rpm should be 2130 50. The charge pressure should be 2500 150 kPa (363 22 psi).If the charge pressure drops significantly and the charge pumps are operating properly, a drive component has probably failed. The case drain filter should be analyzed for debris. If the drive pressure can not be achieved or if the rpm is low, recalibrate the minimum machine speed. In position 1 of submode 15, both tracks should start to move when the calibrate switch is moved upward by one click. The power train oil must be heated to 50 °C (122 °F) to 60 °C (140 °F) in order to perform this check. If the drive pressure can not be achieved and the machine is properly calibrated, check the synchronization valve for leaks. The towing valves must not be broken and the towing valves must be tight. Measure the forward and reverse drive pressures during the single stall test. If high pressure occurs in the forward and reverse drive loops simultaneously
