SAFETY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR REPLACING THE SCREW IN THE 272-6773 RELIEF VALVE
MODELS INVOLVED - 904B WHEEL LOADERS
Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
The lifting arms can not be lowered when the engine is stopped and the hydraulic accumulator is not charged. A screw, in the 272-6773 Relief Valve, that is used to move the spool in order to lower the lift arms is too short. A new screw needs to be installed. Failure to install the new screw could lead to a situation where failure to be able to lower the loader arms may result in personal injury or death. You will not be charged for the service performed.
Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 13Jun2006 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure
Replace the 272-6768 Screw and the 272-6767 Nut. Use the following procedure in order to replace the screw and nut.
1) Move the machine to a level area that is away from other machinery that is in operation. Engage the parking brake.
2) Connect the steering frame lock. For the proper procedure, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9762, ?904B Wheel Loader Machine Systems?, ?Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect?.
3) Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. For the proper procedure, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9762, ?904B Wheel Loader Machine Systems?, ?System Pressure ? Release?.

4) Access the bank valve (1) from the articulation joint. Locate the 272-6773 Relief Valve (2) that is on the 272-6760 Control Valve Group (LIFT) (3).
5) For any warnings or notices, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9762, ?904B Wheel Loader Machine Systems?, ?Bank Valve ? Remove?. Remove the 272-6767 Nut (4). Remove the 272-6768 Screw (5).

6) Install the 282-2721 Adjustment Screw (6) on the 272-6773 Relief Valve. Adjust the screw to a length of 21 ? 1 mm (0.83 ? 0.04 inch) (A).
7) Inspect the 272-6767 Nut. If the nut is damaged, install a new 272-6767 Nut. Torque the 272-6767 Nut (4) to 24.4 ? 2.7 N?m (18.00 ? 2.00 lb ft).
8) Separate the frame lock. For the proper procedure, refer to Disassembly and Assembly, RENR9762, ?904B Wheel Loader Machine Systems?, ?Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect?.
