The following chart shows new and former part numbers. See Illustration 1 for locations.
Illustration 1. 9G-7060 Bevel and Transmission Gear Group. Procedure for reworking 9G-9140 Cage for use as 8E-2414 Cage.
Illustration 2 (1) Face A. (2) Face B. (3) 23.282 mm (.91 in) (Original dimension for 9G-9140 Cage.)To rework the 9G-9140 Cage into an 8E-2414 Cage, remove 0.5 to 0.8 mm (.02 to .03 in) from Face B. Keep Face B surface parallel [within 0.5 mm (.02 in)] to Face A.Bevel Transfer Gear Bearing Setting Procedure
It is very important to follow the setting procedure exactly. The specified bearing clearance is .03 to .08 mm (.001 to .003 in). Bearings must not be set with a preload. The bearing setting procedure includes four basic steps:1. Measure and machine, if necessary, the gear case assembly bearing bore.2. Adjust the pinion bearing to an end play setting of .03 to .08 mm (.001 to .003 in).3. Set the bevel pinion apex so it is on the center line of the bevel gear cross shaft.4. Recheck the torques required to turn the bevel pinion to insure there is no binding.Measure and Machine Transfer Gear Case Assembly Bearing Bore
Illustration 3.
Illustration 4.1. Measure the length (A) of the case bore from location (F). The distance should equal 331 .2 mm (13.0 .01 in). See Illustrations 3 and 4.2. If the (A) is less than 331 .2 mm (13.0 .008 in), then the bore must be machined deeper according to the following chart. Setting the Pinion Bearing End Play
Illustration 5. (A) Install temporary shims here. (B) 9G-6758 Retainer. (C) Shim as required to obtain .03 to .08 mm (.001 to .003 in) end play. (D) Shoulder Race.1. Install temporary shims of uniform thickness to raise straight roller bearing away from the outer race shoulder. See (A) in Illustration 5. Use a shim of 1.5 mm (.06 in) minimum thickness. Maximum shim thickness is 2.2 mm (.09 in). Record the shim thickness for later use as one of the required dimensions for setting the pinion apex. Installing a temporary shim pack insures that there is no interference (binding) between the pinion straight roller bearing, outer race, and the case bore.2. Install the cups and cones.3. Install the 9G-6758 Retainer at Location (B). Tighten the two retainer bolts to insure the bearings are properly seated against the shaft shoulder.4. The specified end play for the pinion bearing is .03 to .08 mm (.001 to .003 in).
Illustration 6. (E) Loose 5P-4043 Bolts. No shims. (F) Measure the torque required to turn free running bearing. (H) 9G-6759 Cover.5. Install the 9G-6759 cover using no shims and two 5P-4043 Bolts (1/2) with threads only started to hold the cover in place. Using one of the 9G-6758 retainer bolts and a torque wrench, measure the torque required to turn the free running pinion gear (bearing). Turn the gear slowly and at a constant speed. Record the torque reading. A typical reading would be approximately 1.13 N m
