Illustration 1 g00625712There are two suction screens inside the hoist, torque converter and brake tank. Clean the screens whenever there is a failure of the following components:
Torque converter
Hoist cylinders
Hoist pumpsAccess the screens from the inner side of the hoist, torque converter and brake tank.The machine must be level. The parking brake must be engaged and the engine must be stopped.
Remove the filler cap in order to prevent a vacuum in the tank. Install the cap after the tank has been drained. This will prevent dirt from entering the system.

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Hand tighten the NPT pipe nipple. Do not use tools.
Remove the tank drain plug (1). Install a 88 mm (3.5 inch) long NPT pipe nipple in order to open the internal drain valve. The outer diameter of the NPT pipe nipple should be 25 mm (1 inch). Drain the oil into a suitable container.
Remove the three tube assemblies from the back of the tank.

Remove the suction screen (2) for the torque converter.
Remove the suction screen (3) for the hoist.
Wash the suction screens and the bolts in clean, nonflammable solvent.
Install the clean suction screens, the tube assemblies and the clean bolts.
Fill the hoist and brake tank. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities". Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities".
Use the engine shutdown control to prevent the engine from starting. Crank the engine for approximately 15 seconds. The oil level will decrease as oil fills the system.
Add oil to the tank in order to raise the oil level to the safe starting range.

Repeat Step 9 and Step 10 until the oil stabilizes in the "FULL COLD" mark in the sight gauge (5).
Lower the guard on the engine shutdown control. Start the engine. Run the engine at low idle. Inspect the machine for oil leaks. Make necessary repairs.
Raise the dump body or open the doors until the hoist cylinders are extended halfway. Lower the dump body or close the doors. Add oil, if necessary.
Raise the dump body or open the doors until the hoist cylinders are fully extended. Lower the dump body or close the doors. Add oil, if necessary.
Repeat Step 13 and Step 14 until the oil level stabilizes.
Install the filler cap.
