Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Use Tooling (A) to secure the boom cylinder during the assembly procedure. The weight of the assembled boom cylinder is 180 kg (400 lb).
Check all parts of the boom cylinder for wear or damage. Replace any damaged parts or worn parts with new parts. Make sure that all of the parts for the boom cylinder are thoroughly clean before assembly.
Install sleeve bearing (16) and retaining ring (15) in head (4). Install buffer seal (17), U-cup seal (18) and backup ring (19) in head (4), as shown. Apply 4C-4032 Bearing Mount Compound in the groove of head (4). Use Tool (D) to install lip seal (20) in head (4). Install the lip seal so that the lip is facing toward the outside of the head. Make sure that the lip seal is properly seated in the counterbore of the head.
Apply clean hydraulic oil on buffer seal (17), U-cup seal (18) and lip seal (20) .
Install backup ring (14) and O-ring seal (13) in head (4), as shown.
Place head (4) in position on cylinder assembly (12). Install eight socket head bolts (3) that hold head (4) to cylinder assembly (12). Install rod assembly (2) in head (4) and cylinder assembly (12). Remove eight socket head bolts (3). Remove cylinder assembly (12) from rod assembly (2) and head (4) .
Install seal ring (1) on rod assembly (2). The slit in the seal ring must face in the direction of the piston. Install stop (10) on rod assembly (2) .
Install piston (6) on rod assembly (2). Lubricate the contact face of piston (6) and the threads on rod assembly (2) with clean SAE 10W hydraulic oil. Install locknut (5). Use Tooling (C) to tighten locknut (5) to a torque of 5900 295 N m (4350 220 lb ft).
Apply 5P-0960 Multipurpose Grease on the inside diameter and the outside
