Parking Brake Release and Torque Converter Oil Filters(2) Parking brake release oil filter. Problem: Rubber particles are found. Probable Cause:* Seal failure.* Hose failure.
Three-Section Pump(3) Parking brake release pump section.(4) Torque converter charging pump section.(5) Torque converter scavenge pump section. Problem: Shiny steel particles are found. Probable Cause:* Mechanical failure of parking brake release section (3) of the three-section oil pump. Parking brake release oil filter (2) and torque converter oil filter (6) each has an oil filter bypass valve. An oil filter bypass valve lets oil bypass (go around) the oil filter element(s) whenever the pressure difference between inlet oil and outlet oil at the oil filter gets too high. Any oil that does not go through the filter element(s) goes directly into the hydraulic system. Dirty oil causes restrictions in valve orifices, sticking valves, etc.The pressure setting of the bypass valve in parking brake release oil filter (2) is 248 21 kPa (36 3 psi). The pressure setting of the bypass valve in torque converter oil filter (6) is approximately 250 kPa (36 psi).Check: Check the torque converter oil filter.
Remove torque converter filter (6) and inspect the filter for foreign material.

Drain the torque converter housing. Measure the amount of oil removed from the torque converter housing. Inspect suction screen (7) for foreign material and/or a restriction.
Bottom of the Torque Converter Housing(7) Torque converter suction screen. Problem: More than 15 L (4 US gal) of oil is drained from the torque converter housing. Probable Cause:*Restriction in suction screen (7). Problem: More than 15 L (4 US gal) of oil is drained from the torque converter housing and aluminum particles are found. Probable Cause:*Mechanical failure of the torque converter. Problem: More than 15 L (4 US gal) of oil is drained from the torque converter housing. During "Check: Check the Parts Inside the Hydraulic Tank", shiny steel particles were found in the bottom of the tank. Probable Cause:*Mechanical failure of torque converter scavenge pump section (5). Problem: Iron or steel chips are found. Probable Cause:*Worn flywheel or starter gear on engine. Inspect the starter and flywheel gears.*Worn drive or driven gear on torque converter oil pump. Problem: Rubber particles are found. Probable Cause:*Seal failure.*Hose failure. Problem: Bronze particles are found. Probable Cause:*Worn lockup clutch in the torque converter.Check (AE40 ONLY): Check the regenerative sequence valve ejector line screen.
Remove body end of hose (8) and ejector the screen line (9) (behind hose flange), and inspect the screen for foreign material.
