Information:
Introduction
The problem that is identified in the technical information bulletin that follows does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.Problem

(A) Maximum of 16 mm (0.6 inch) (B) 5.0 to 5.5 mm (0.20 to 0.22 inch)There are reports of multiple failures of 150-8355 Spider and Bearing Gp (C). Failure reports are showing a lack of lubrication in combination with driveshaft vibration as the main failure mode.Solution
Illustration 2 g03323102
Visually inspect spider and bearing group (C) after 2000 hours of operation and at every 250 hour service interval. Ensure that the balance weights are present on the slip joint. Look for missing paint on the slip joint or broken tack welds. If nothing seems unusual, then the balance weights are properly in place. Refer to Illustration 1. Install one 8T-2823 Recorder (1) on two opposite sides of the spider and bearing group. Install the recorder on the end of the shafts of the U-joints. Record the temperature from the recorder at each 250 hour service interval. If the spider gets hot enough to register on the 8T-2823 Recorder , then that U-joint should be replaced. The operators should pay attention to noise and vibration along with significant grease loss and paint discoloration. Grease loss prior to the first 500 hours of U-joint operation should be ignored because of excess grease from U-joint assembly. If dealers want to, they can now choose to Relube the U-joints until Caterpillar has a Permanent Corrective Action (PCA). Refer to Illustration 1. The dealers can replace both set screw plugs in the U-joint cross with a 439-1875 Adapter or equivalent zerk. Caterpillar recommend that the U-joints be greased every 500 hours with lithium complex grease that contains no moly additives. 1P-0808 Multipurpose Grease is an example of acceptable grease for relubrication. The grease should be pumped into the U-joints until new grease can be see past the seals on all four trunnions. Use production parts to replace spider and bearing group if any of these signs are present. Using a 435-3382 Wrench may help to properly seat the U-joints during assembly as well. Specifications, KENR8391, "Drive Shaft-Main" and Disassembly and Assembly, KENR8397, "Drive Shaft (Main) - Remove and Install" have been improved. Refer to Service Magazine, SEPD1697 for improved techniques when installing the drive shaft during commissioning. Report any failure in SIMSi and communicate to Lower Power Train Service Engineering, in order to help Caterpillar define an appropriate rework procedure.
