This article replaces the article titled "Main Bearing Cap Installation Procedure", that appeared on Page 10 of the June 1995 issue of Engine News.
Effective with the above engine serial numbers, the crankshaft main bearing installation procedure has changed. Make note of this new procedure in the Reference Service Manual Modules.
Install Crankshaft Main Bearings 1203-012
The bearing has a location tab. When viewed from the flywheel, counterclockwise rotation is required for bearing upper half installation. Be sure the tab is properly seated in its groove. Be sure the tab does not shear in the groove.
If the main bearing cap studs were removed, use a 2.00 - 12 Taper Lock Tap to clean the threads in the cylinder block prior to installing the studs. Tighten the studs to 100 20 N m (75 15 lb ft). 1. Use a clean cloth to wipe main bearing upper half. Put clean engine oil on the bearing upper half. Use tool (A) to "roll" main bearing upper half (1) into the cylinder block. (3606, G3606, 3612, G3612) The No. 4 main bearing journal does not have an oil hole. Tool (A) cannot be used to roll
