3406C Electronic (4CK1836-Up) Truck Engines Rated At 460 HorsepowerReference: Truck Engine News, August 1991, Page 1, "Service Tips For Turbocharger Removal And Installation "Description of Change: New turbocharger groups with ceramic turbine wheels are used in the above truck engines. The ceramic turbine wheel is joined to a standard steel shaft. When compared with a steel turbine wheel, the ceramic turbine wheel provides improved acceleration response. These are the first heavy duty diesel engines to use ceramic turbine wheels. The new turbochargers are available at this time as complete groups only (no cartridges). The turbine housing is permanently oriented and the band clamp between the cartridge and the turbine housing is lock wired. This is to warn that disassembly is unnecessary.Adaptable To: The new 7E9514 Turbocharger Group was installed in 3406B (5KJ2105-2317) Truck Engines rated at 425 horsepower. For parts service, use the "metallic" 7E3835 or Remanufactured 0R6053 Turbocharger Group or the 7E3854 or Remanufactured 0R6054 Cartridge Group.The new 6I3029 (Mid-Mount) and 6I3172 (Low Mount) Turbocharger Groups and Remanufactured 0R6557 (Mid-Mount) and 0R6558 (Low Mount) Turbocharger Groups are available for the 3406C Electronic (4CK1 836-Up) Truck Engines rated at 460 horsepower. The "Low Mount" turbochargers are used only on the above engines in Ford Trucks.
Before installing a new turbocharger, be careful to clean any crust from the divider wall of the exhaust manifold center section. To prevent manifold corrosion, avoid excess exhaust temperatures when operating with the new turbochargers. Be very careful not to allow any debris to fall into the air intake piping when changing the air cleaner elements. See the Reference Article.
