Some C32 Engines have experienced failures of the 4N-8218 V-Belt that result in the engine overheating due to lack of rotation of the fan. Descriptions of the failures report the belt to be torn, broken, or worn out. Failures are primarily isolated to the 281-3146 Fan Drive Gp and the 274-1894 General Ar .Solution
The solution includes the proper inspection, adjustment, and replacement of the belts if the replacement is needed.Inspecting the Fan Drive Belt
Check belt tension at the initial commissioning procedure and throughout the life of the engine. To maximize the engine performance during the life of the engine, inspect the belts for wear and for cracking. Check the belt tension. Adjust the belt tension in order to minimize belt slippage. Belt slippage will decrease the life of the belts.Adjusting the Fan Drive Belt
Loosen the mounting bolt for the pulley.
Loosen the adjusting nut for the pulley.
Move the pulley in order to adjust the belt tension. Refer to the "Belt Tension Chart" in the Specifications Manual.
Tighten the adjusting nut to the proper torque.
Tighten the mounting bolt to the proper torque.
For the proper torque specifications, refer to the Specifications Manual.
Use the 240-8220 Belt Tension Gauge Gp in order to verify proper belt tension.Replacement of the Fan Drive Belt
If existing belts show signs of wear, replace the existing belts with new belts. Follow the steps for adjusting the new belts that are listed above.
If new belts are installed, check the tension again after thirty minutes of engine operation at the rated rpm. Note: For applications that require multiple drive belts, replace the drive belts in matched sets. Replacing one drive belt of a matched set will cause the new drive belt to carry more load because the older drive belts are stretched. The additional load on the new drive belt could cause the new drive belt to fail.
