You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.Cooling System Coolant
Change Coolant/Clean System
Do not change the coolant until you read and understand the material in the topic Cooling System Specifications in the Maintenance Section of this manual.
Drain the coolant earlier whenever the coolant is dirty or foaming is observed. The radiator cap is located in the top of the hood. 1. Remove the radiator cap slowly to relieve pressure.2. Remove the access cover located in the bottom guard under the engine.3. Open the drain valve and allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container. The valve is located under the radiator.4. Close the drain valve. Fill the system with clean water and a 6 to 10 percent concentration of cooling system cleaner.5. Start and run the engine for 90 minutes. Stop the engine, open the drain valve and allow the cleaning solution to drain into a suitable container.6. Flush the system with water, with the engine stopped, until the draining water is clear.7. Close the drain valve and install the access cover.8. Add the coolant solution. See the topics Cooling System Specifications and Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities in the Maintenance Section of this manual. Do not add supplemental coolant additive or change element at this time, unless you are not using Caterpillar Antifreeze which contains additive.9. Start the engine and operate it with the radiator cap off, until the thermostat opens and the level stabilizes.10. Maintain the coolant level above the sight glass and the bottom of the fill pipe.11. Install the radiator cap.12. Stop the engine.Clean Outside of Radiator Fins
Compressed air is preferred, but high pressure water or steam can be used to remove dust, leaves, and general debris from radiator fins.Add Extender (For Engines Using ELC Only)
For engines using Caterpillar Extended Life Coolant, Extender must be added every 3000 hours or 2 years. Refer to the chart that follows to add the recommended amount of Extender to your cooling system. With the exception of adding the Extender and maintaining your coolant level, no other maintenance is required. For more information on adding Extender to your cooling system, see the topic Cooling System Specifications in the Maintenance Section of this manual or contact your Caterpillar dealer.Engine Valve Lash and Fuel Injector Timing
Adjust
Refer to the Service Manual for the complete engine valve lash adjustment procedure. The correct fuel timing specification is given on the Engine Information Plate. Fuel timing specification may be different for engines with different applications and/or power ratings.Have a qualified service person to check and adjust the fuel injector timing. Special tools and training are required.Refer to the Service Manual or your Caterpillar dealer for the complete fuel injector timing adjustment procedure.Engine Valve Rotators
Inspect
When inspecting the valve rotators, protective glasses or face shield and protective clothing must be worn, to prevent being burned by hot oil spray.
1. Start the engine and run at LOW IDLE. 2. Watch the
