Shutoffs
Shutoffs and alarms are one of three following types:
Switches
Transducers
Differential Pressure SensorsShutoffs are set at critical levels for the following conditions:
Coolant temperature
Oil pressure
OverspeedA particular shutoff may need to be acknowledged at the control panel before the engine will start.
Always determine the cause of the engine shutdown. Make necessary repairs before attempting to restart the engine.
Make sure that you are familiar with the following items:
Types and locations of shutoff sensors
Conditions that cause each shutoff to function
Resetting procedure for engine restartAlarms
Engines may be equipped with alarms that are used to alert the operator when undesirable operating conditions occur.
When an alarm is activated, corrective measures must be taken before the situation becomes an emergency in order to avoid possible engine damage.
The alarm will remain active until the condition is corrected.Testing the Shutoff and Alarm System
During testing, abnormal operating conditions must be simulated. Perform the tests correctly in order to help prevent possible engine damage.
