Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Open the engine access door (1) on the left side of the machine.
At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure. Steam can cause personal injury. Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure. Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
2. Remove radiator cap slowly to release the pressure in the cooling system. Drain the coolant from the radiator until the level is below the level of the lowest hose opening at the coolant filter. 3. Close two valves (5).4. Using Tooling (A) (not shown), remove coolant conditioner element (4).5. Mark and identify two hose assemblies (6) for installation purposes. Disconnect two hose assemblies (6) from the valves on coolant conditioner base assembly (3).6. Remove two bolts (2) and the nuts that hold coolant conditioner base assembly (3) on the mounting bracket. Remove coolant conditioner base assembly (3). The following steps are for the installation of the coolant conditioner element and base assembly.7. Install the coolant conditioner element and base assembly in the reverse order of removal. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for all fluid capacities and the proper filling procedures.
