Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Make sure that there is enough clearance in order to fully articulate the machine. Make sure that all personnel are clear of the machine. Install the steering frame locks.
Fully articulate the machine to the left.
Perform this procedure on both cylinders simultaneously. Damage may result if only one cylinder is tested.
Make sure that the following conditions exist:
The dump body is lowered to the frame.
The engine is off.
The hydraulic pressure is zero.
Disconnect the line from the head end port (1) of the right steering cylinder and cap the line. Disconnect the line from the cylinder rod end port (2) of the left steering cylinder and cap the line. This also involves removing the steering cylinder crossover relief valve. Attach a length of tubing to each port and direct the other end into a suitable container.Note: Some oil may discharge from the connection. Allow the oil to drain before you perform the test.
Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.
Instruct an assistant to articulate the machine to the left into the steering frame locks.
Look for a continuous discharge of oil from either of the tubings. This would indicate a leak in the piston seal. Also check for leaks at the rod seals.
Stop the engine and vent the hydraulic tank. Remove the plugs and tubing. Install the hydraulic lines to the steering cylinders.
Make sure that the cap on the hydraulic tank is tight and start the engine.
Fully articulate the machine to the right. Stop the engine and vent the hydraulic tank.
Perform the preceding test again, but disconnect the opposite hydraulic lines. For example, disconnect the head end instead of the rod end.
Stop the engine and remove the test equipment. Reconnect the lines. Remove the steering frame locks.See Disassembly and Assembly, SENR8693, "Steer Cylinder".
