Start By:a. Connect the steering frame lock. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Steering Frame Lock - Separate and Connect" for the machine that is being serviced.b. Release the pressure from the hydraulic system. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury.Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.
Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism. Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, all hoses and all tubes. This will help prevent fluid loss and this will help to prevent contaminants from entering the system.1. Drain the steering tank oil into a suitable container for storage or disposal. The capacity of the steering tank is 90 liters (23.7 US gal).

View with Engine Removed from Machine2. Disconnect the six hose assemblies from secondary steering diverter valve (1). The three spacers (3) are different in length, mark for identification.3. Remove three bolts (2), the washers and three spacers (3) from secondary steering diverter valve (1).4. Remove the secondary steering diverter valve from the machine. The weight of the secondary steering diverter valve is 44 kg (97 lb).
