Engine Storage
If the engine will not be started for 1 month, the lubricating oil will drain from the cylinder walls and from the piston rings. Rust can form on the cylinder walls, resulting in increased engine wear and reduced engine service life.To help prevent excessive engine wear, use the following guidelines:
Complete all the lubrication recommendations that are listed in the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule" in the Maintenance Section.
If freezing temperatures are expected, check the cooling system for adequate protection against freezing. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fluid Recommendations" for additional information.Special precautions should be made under the following conditions:
The engine is out of operation.
Use of the engine is not planned.Storage - Greater than 7 Days and less than 30 Days
Caterpillar recommends maintaining the temperature of the engine to a temperature of at least 5° C (9° F) above ambient temperature to prevent corrosion. The usage of jacket water heaters is an appropriate method.Storage - Greater than 30 Days and less than 1 Year

Note: If the engine is equipped with a pod unit drive, refer to the information which is provided by the manufacturer of the pod drive unit.Storage Procedure
Thoroughly clean the transmission.
Paint the transmission with a good quality paint.
If the transmission will be stored for more than 6 months, VCI oil will provide additional protection against moisture. Add VCI oil at a rate of 2 percent of the lubricating oil capacity.
Operate the transmission for a short period to circulate the oil.
Seal all the openings with covers and/or tape.
Use a multipurpose grease to coat all the external moving parts such as the linkage.
Store the transmission under a waterproof cover.Procedure After Storage
Remove the waterproof cover. Clean the transmission.
Install a new transmission oil filter.
Ensure that there is no water in the oil and that the oil level is correct.
