The fuel filter/water separators used in the Generator Set Power Module are manufactured by Parker Hannifin Corporation, Racor Division. The separators filter particles and water from the diesel fuel supply to the engine. There are two types of separators used, single and double assemblies. Model numbers are listed below.Single AssemblyModel Number: 1000FGCaterpillar Part Number: 5Z-9503Used in 3400 Series Generator Set Power ModulesDouble AssemblyModel Number: 73/1000 FGCaterpillar Part Number: 4P-7380Used in 3500 Series Generator Set Power ModulesThere are two maintenance operations that need to be performed on the water separators for proper operation. First, inspect and/or drain the collection bowl of water daily. It must be drained before the contaminant level reaches the bottom of the turbine. To drain the unit:1. Open the drain valve with a suitable collection container in place.2. Prime the unit by removing the lid, and filling the unit with clean fuel.3. Replace the lid, and snugly tighten the T-handle by hand.Second, the fuel filter element will need to be periodically replaced. It is suggested the filter element be changed every 500 hours of operation, at every other oil change, or when a loss of engine power is noted. The power loss could indicate the filter is restricting fuel flow.As a rule of thumb, the element should be changed when the restriction reaches 20 to 34 kPa (3 to 5 psi).To change a filter element:1. Remove the lid.2. Remove the element by holding the molded handle and slowly pulling upward with a twisting motion.3. Replace the lid gasket with the one supplied with the new element.4. Apply a coating of clean fuel or motor oil to the seal prior to assembly.5. Insert the new element with a slow downward twisting motion.6. Fill the unit with clean fuel, then replace the lid. Snugly tighten the T-handle by hand.7. Start the engine, and check for leaks.Replacement parts, including filter elements, are available from your Caterpillar dealer. Filter sizes of 2, 10, and 30 microns are available. Proper filter selection is important for proper filter life and engine operation.
