1100, 3100 Series Engines;
3208 Truck, Industrial, Marine EnginesThe coolant must be drained from the above engines or short blocks before you send them to the Caterpillar Tractor Co. remanufacturing facility at Bettendorf, Iowa, U.S.A. Some engines or blocks have been sent to this facility with water in the block, front cover, and/or oil cooler. Much damage was caused by the freezing temperatures.
Before shipment, the dealer must completely drain coolant from all of the engine compartments-the block, oil cooler, front cover, and, on 3208's, the temperature regulator housing. Do this immediately after you remove the engine from its installation, even in warm climates because the temperature can be much below freezing before the engine gets to Bettendorf.
Four or five plugs must be removed to drain ALL the coolant:
... There are two or three plugs in the block-one in the right rear side and one in the left rear side, and on 3208's there is a plug near the center of the block on the right side. See Illustrations 1 and 2.

On all 3208 Engines (225 Excavators and 613 Tractors also use these engines), there is one plug in the temperature regulator housing. See Illustration 1.... On all 1100 and 3100 Series Engines (225 Excavators and 613 Tractors also use 3100 engines), there is one plug in the front cover on the right side behind the cover for temperature regulators. See Illustration 3.
