(9) CavityThe differential divides input torque equally between the two sides. The input speed of the differential is always equal to the average speed of side gears (6) and (4). If the machine is moving straight and neither side is spinning, both side gears (6) and (4) rotate at the same speed. The differential housing will also turn at the same speed. If one side is turning faster than the other, side gears (6) and (4) rotate at different speeds. Will cause pinions (3) to rotate. The average speed of the two side gears will always equal the input speed. Torque will be divided equally. The output shaft of the transfer gear sends power to bevel pinion (1). The bevel pinion (1) turns the bevel gear (2) which is fastened to the differential carrier. The carrier has four pinions (3), a cross shaft (5) for pinions and two side gears (4) and (6). The connection between the four pinions (3) and the two side gears is at right angles through a gear mesh. Splines make the connection between the side gears and the axle shafts. The carrier hubs for the differential run on tapered roller bearings. Pinions (3) turn on tapered roller bearings. Pinions (3) and side gears (4) and (6) turn against the thrust washers. The thrust washers prevent wear between the side gears and the differential carrier. The differential gets lubrication from oil that is thrown inside the bevel gear housing. A flat surface on each side of cross shaft (5) allows lubrication to go to pinions (3) and to the thrust washers. For the proper adjustment procedure for the differential and bevel gear, refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Differential and Bevel Gear - Adjust".Differential Lock

(10) Differential lock control switchThe differential can be locked to provide equal wheel speed between the wheels. To prevent damage to the differential, do not engage the differential lock control at high speeds.Illustration 3 through Illustration7 show the components in the differential lock system. The differential lock pump (1) is mounted to the brake/fan pump (2). The differential lock pump supplies oil through the differential lock filter (3) to the differential lock solenoid (7). The differential lock filter is on the right side of the machine.Differential lock solenoid (7) is on the left rear side of the differential case. Differential lock solenoid (7) is turned off and on by the differential lock relay located in the cab fuse panel. The relay is turned off and on by the differential lock switch (10) on the right operator joystick. The differential lock relief valve (6) is on the right side of the machine near the differential lock filter. The relief valve limits pressure in the
