Illustration 1 g02134072Service brake control (pedal) (1) is located to the left of accelerator control (2).Use the service brakes for stopping the machine and use the service brakes to avoid an engine overspeed.Engage - Press the pedal to engage the service brakes. Use the service brakes for reducing ground speed or for stopping the machine.Note: If the machine will remain stopped, shift the transmission into neutral and engage the parking brake.Disengage - Release the pedal to disengage the service brakes.Use correct gear selection and the retarder to control the speed of the machine on downhill grades. To avoid an engine overspeed with the retarder engaged, use the service brakes to downshift the machine to a lower gear. Avoid using the service brakes to maintain current gear.A diagnostic event pop-up will display on the CAT Information Display when the service brakes are applied during downhill operation based on high axle oil temperature. When this pop-up occurs, operator should take action by reducing machine speed and downshift to lower gear. The retarder should be used to maintain machine speed downhill.Note: Repeated engagement of the service brakes on downhill grades may cause excessive wear and overheating of the service brakes. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Retarder Control" for downhill grade operation.Note: The service brake is the primary braking system on the machine. Also, in the event of failure within the service brake system, the service brake control provides the secondary brake function on the machine to allow the operator to bring the machine to a stop.
