Start By:a. remove rear tires and rimsb. remove fender and support*c. remove axle shafts (rear)d. separate drive chain*This operation is located in the Disassembly & Assembly, 24H Motor Grader, Machine Systems module, SENR1438. Fluid Spillage ContainmentCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before operating any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact the skin. Be sure that the engine and components are cool enough to touch with your bare hand prior to performing any service work.
The chain does not need to be removed from the brake sprockets to remove the tandem drive.1. Install Tool (A) on final drive planetary carrier (1) as shown. Using a wrench turn final drive planetary carrier (1) while rotating the rear brake spindle (2). Stop the rotation immediately after the chain has fallen off the final drive sprocket. Use Tool (B) (not shown) to pull the chain from the final drive sprocket towards the brake. The chain can be stored in a bundle between the brake sprocket and the final drive sprocket.2. Repeat Step 1 for the remaining chain.
Release the pressure on the brakes prior to disconnecting the tube assemblies. Failure to release the pressure could result in personal injury.
3. Release the pressure on Tooling (C). Remove Tooling (C) from block (3). 4. Remove hose assembly (4) from tandem drive housing assembly (5). Cap and plug all connections to avoid system contamination. Hose assemblies (6), (7) and (8) and tee (9) are located on the left tandem drive only. Hose (6) should be located at port (A).5. Remove hose assembly (6) from tandem drive housing (5). Cap and plug all connections to avoid system contamination.
Located on left tandem drive6. Remove two hose assemblies (7) and (8) from tee (9). Cap and plug all connections to avoid system contamination.
Tandem drive housing that has been removed to show lifting device7. Put Tooling (D) and a suitable lifting device on rear brake spindles (2), and tandem drive housing (5) as shown. Secure the lifting device to a hoist. For photographic reasons the link assembly has been removed.8. Remove 30 bolts (10) and the washers that hold tandem drive housing (5) to housing (11). Remove tandem housing (5) from the machine. The weight of tandem drive housing is 3042 kg (6700 lb). 9. Remove O-ring seal (12) from housing (11). The following steps are for the installation of the tandem drive.10. Make sure all components of the tandem drive are clean of dirt and foreign material prior to installation.11. Check all components for wear or damage and replace if necessary. 12. Install O-ring seal (12) to housing
