Removal Procedure
Start By:
Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Release of Pressure in Hydraulic System" for the machine that is being serviced.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: The left hand travel motor is shown. The procedure is identical for the other side.
Drain the oil from the final drive into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Final Drive Oil - Change". The capacity of one final drive is 22 L (5.8 US gal).

Attach a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to guard assembly (2). Remove two bolts (3), the washers, and the hard washers. Remove five bolts (1) and the washers. Remove guard assembly (2) from the machine. The weight of guard assembly (2) is approximately 154 kg (340 lb). Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

Disconnect four hose assemblies (5), (6), (7), and (8) from travel motor (4).

Fasten a hoist and a suitable lifting sling to travel motor (4). Remove four twelve point head bolts (9). Remove travel motor (4) from the machine. The weight of travel motor (4) is approximately 90 kg (200 lb).
