(42)Engine Valve Lash
Valve Numbering GuideAdjust valves with engine stopped and cold. Use Caterpillar part number 5P7307 engine turning tool to turn engine. See SERVICE MANUAL FOR VALVE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE.(43)Cooling System - Changing Antifreeze Solution
At Operating Temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check coolant level ONLY when engine is stopped and radiator cap is cool enough to touch with your hand.Remove filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling System Conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
If machine is to be stored in, or shipped to, an area with below freezing temperatures; the cooling system must either be protected to the lowest expected ambient temperature, or drained completely.
When permanent antifreeze and water solutions are used in the cooling system, the solution should be drained and replaced "EVERY 2000 SERVICE HOURS OR 1 YEAR".However, when additions of coolant conditioner are made to the cooling system EVERY 500 SERVICE HOURS OR 3 MONTHS, it is not necessary to drain and refill yearly. The antifreeze change period can be extended to 4,000 service hours or 2 years.Do not use Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner with Dowtherm 209 FULL-FILL coolant.
The machine must be level, the parking brake engaged and the engine stopped. 1. Loosen the cooling system radiator cap (1) and the aftercooler filler cap (2) slowly, to relieve the pressure. Remove the caps. 2. Open the engine radiator valve (1) and the aftercooler radiator drain valve (2). Drain the coolant. 3. Remove the coolant drain plug (1) from the front of the brake and torque converter oil cooler. Located on the left side of the engine. 4. Remove the drain plug (2) from the rear of the oil cooler and drain the coolant. 5. Remove the coolant drain plug (3) from the front of the brake and torque converter oil cooler located on the right side of the engine. Remove drain plug (4) from the rear of oil cooler and drain the coolant. 7. Remove the coolant drain plug (5) from the engine oil cooler. Drain the coolant. 8. Remove coolant drain plug from the air compressor block. Drain the coolant.9. Install all of the drain plugs. Close the radiator drain valves.10. Do not completely fill the cooling system. Allow for addition of Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner, or equivalent.11. Mix the antifreeze solution to provide protection to the lowest expected ambient temperature.
To help avoid air locks, add coolant slowly, at 5 U.S. gallons (19 liters) per minute, or less, to within 1/2 inch (1 cm) of the bottom of the fill pipe.
12. Add coolant (antifreeze solution). See REFILL CAPACITIES.13. Add 5 quarts (4.75 liters) of Caterpillar Cooling System Conditioner, or equivalent, so that the cooling system will have a 3% concentration of conditioner.14. Add 2 quarts (1.9 liters) to the aftercooler radiator.15. Start and run the engine with the engine cap removed. Allow the coolant to warm and the level to stabilize. Add coolant if necessary. Stop the engine.16. Inspect both radiator cap gaskets.
