(1) Available substituteNote: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the installation procedure, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble.
Verify that all the components are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.
Inspect all components for wear and replace the components, if necessary.

Prior to installation, lower the temperature of bearing (9) to a temperature of −45°C (−49°F).
Use a suitable press to insert bearing (9) around ball stud (6). Install retaining ring (8) on the ball stud.
Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for the opposite side of the steering cylinder.
Support the weight of the steering cylinder with Tooling (D). The steering cylinder weighs approximately 144 kg (318 lb).
Apply Tooling (J) to the threads of the ball stud and on the taper of the ball stud.
Install the steering cylinder in the truck.

Apply Tooling (J) to the face of locknut (7). Install locknut (7) loosely on ball stud (6).
Repeat Steps 8 and 9 to install the opposite end of the steering cylinder.
Insert Tooling (A) to hold the ball stud (6) while locknut (7) is being tightened.

Use Tooling (B) to install locknut (7). Tighten locknut (7) to a torque of 2550 100 N m (1881 74 lb ft).
Repeat Steps 11 and 12 for the opposite end of the steering cylinder.

Install plug (2). Use Tooling (E) to install retaining ring (5). Install retaining ring (5) onto the ball stud.

Install the O-ring seal and connect hose assembly (3) at each end of the steering cylinder.
Install the fitting. Connect lubrication hose (1) to plug (2) at each end of the steering cylinder.
Repeat Steps 14 through 16 for the opposite end of the steering cylinder.
Repeat Steps 1 through 16 to install the remaining steering cylinder.Note: After the steering cylinders are installed, fill the hydraulic system. For the procedure, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual.
