GAS ENGINE,
Information:
Starting at Normal Temperature
Key must be in run position with engine running to maintain electrical and hydraulic functions and prevent serious machine damage. If the engine does not start, return the key to OFF before returning it to START.Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again.
1. Insert the key into the disconnect switch and turn the switch to the ON position. 2. Make sure the circuit breaker reset button remains depressed. 3. This machine is equipped with an engine neutral start system. The system allows engine starting only when the hydraulic activation control lever is in the LOCKED position. Move the hydraulic activation control lever to the LOCKED position.4. Move the equipment control levers to the HOLD position. 5. Turn engine start switch (1) to the ON position. 6. All of indicators on the monitor panel should be activated for approximately 2.5 seconds and the action alarm should sound for one second. If any of the indicators are not activated or the action alarm does not sound, have the electrical system checked and all necessary repairs made before starting the engine.7. Turn engine speed dial (2) to position "5" or "6".8. Turn engine start switch (1) to the START position.9. Release the switch key after the engine starts.Starting In Cold Weather
In cold weather, starting the engine may be difficult due to an increased viscosity of engine oil and reduced capacity of battery. Proper engine starting procedures are especially important in cold weather conditions. After every 30 seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for the starting motor to cool before cranking again.Repeated use of the air heaters will rapidly discharge the batteries. To avoid engine damage, DO NOT use ether as a starting aid for engines equipped with air heaters.
This engine has an inlet manifold heater for cold weather starting. Do not use other types of starting aids such as ether. Such use could result in an explosion and personal injury.
1. Repeat steps 1 through 4 in Starting At Normal Temperature. 2. Turn the engine start switch to the HEAT position to preheat the air heater. After about 30 seconds, the heater indicator on the monitor will come on. This indicates that the engine is ready to start.3. Repeat steps 5 through 9 in Starting At Normal Temperature.4. Return the engine speed dial to position "1" to allow the engine to warm. For starting below -18°C (0°F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperature below -23°C (-10°F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the Operation & Maintenance Manual for Cold Weather Operation Recommendations SEBU5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Engine Starting with Jump Start Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode resulting in personal injury.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow the jump start cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do
