Assembly Procedure

Install joint assembly (16) and joint assembly (20) onto either end of shaft (19). Install the nut and bolt (17). Install the nut and bolt (18). Tighten both nuts to a torque of 30 3 N m (22 2 lb ft).

Place steering column (1) in a suitable soft jawed vise, as shown.
Install joint assembly (16) onto steering column (1). Install the nut and bolt (15). Tighten the nut to a torque of 30 3 N m (22 2 lb ft).

Position gas strut (9) onto steering column (1). Install the nut and bolt (13) and the nut and bolt (14). Tighten the nuts to a torque of 20 3 N m (15 2 lb ft).

Reposition steering column (1) in the soft jawed vise, as shown. Position tilt lever kit (12) onto the steering column. Install screws (11). Tighten screws (11) to a torque of 1.75 .15 N m (15 1.3 lb in).

Lay cable (8) in the position that was noted in the disassembly procedure. Position the end of the cable in the holder on gas strut (9). See the black arrow in Illustration 5.
Pull back the arm on gas strut (9) before securing cable clamp assembly (10) in place. Refer to Illustration 5. Note: When the tilt lever is pulled forward, ensure that the steering column will tilt in both directions. When the tilt lever is released, ensure that the steering column is locked in position. Use the nut on cable clamp assembly (10) in order to adjust the tilt lever.

Install steering wheel (3) onto steering column (1) after lining up the splines on the two components. Ensure that the steering wheel is fully seated onto the steering column.
Install nut (7) in order to secure steering wheel (3) to steering column (1). Tighten the nut to a torque of 48 5 N m (35 4 lb ft).

Install plate (6) into the center of steering wheel (3). Refer to Illustration 8 for the positioning of wire (4).
Install spring (5) into the center of the steering wheel. Connect wire (4) to horn assembly (2).

Install horn assembly (2) into steering wheel (3).
Remove steering column (1) from the soft jawed vise. End By:
Install the steering column.
