A number of issues have been encountered since the introduction of the E Series Challenger Tractors with the Cat ID attachment. The majority of those issues are software related, and have been resolved with new software in production at the Dekalb plant. More information regarding the resolution of these problems on customer owned machines is forthcoming. A problem that has recently been encountered in applications of Cat ID in the trucking market is that of intermittent screen blanking, or occasional complete shut down of the Cat ID. This is a high hour failure related to the integrity of the circuit board in the Cat ID itself, rather than being a software issue. We have not seen a significant number of these failures on the Challenger Tractor application. We are concerned, however, that these failures are occurring but not being reported, due to the knowledge of the software changes that are coming for Challenger Tractors. Software changes alone, will not resolve the screen blanking issue that the truck applications are encountering. That will require a change to the Cat ID hardware, to include improved circuit protection and retention.Solution:
When the announcement is made to define the improvements to the Challenger Tractor Cat ID software, it is suggested that when you contact customers for installation of the new software, you should also ask if they are encountering intermittent Cat ID operation or screen blanking. If that issue is being encountered, we suggest that the software update not be completed on that machine until a new Cat ID display is available. Improvements to the display are being pursued and should be available soon. This is suggested as a means to limit the number of field trips made to the tractor.
