Family OF EnginesSpring (10) (see Illustration 4) on the unit injectors on all of the 3600 Family of Engines is serviceable. If a spring failure occurs on any of these injectors, it is recommended that only the injector spring be replaced.
A tool list has been compiled to allow removal of the injector spring without removing the injectors from the cylinder head. Some parts do not exist in the parts system, however, they can be easily fabricated using the dimensions provided.
Replace failed injector springs with a 6I1334 Unit Injector Spring. The 6I1334 Unit Injector Spring can be identified by a white stripe, a gray and red stripe, and two coils on one end of the spring painted a light blue. Use the following replacement procedure. Be sure to include the injector serial number (Example: GF101) when reporting injector spring failures.Tool List
The following tools can be used to install a new spring in a unit injector without removing the injector from the cylinder head.
Spring Replacement Procedure
Illustration 1. Dimensions for fabricated spring compression plate. Thickness = 9.50 mm (.375 in). Deburr sharp edges. Note (A): Holes are for use with injector forcing screw holes (injector group in or out of the engine). Note (B): Holes are for use while the injector group is in the engine.1. Use the procedures in the Service Manual to remove the rocker arm assembly.2. Remove bolts and washers (1) and clamp (2).
Illustration 2. Location of components.3. Center compression plate (3) over the injector and install two 3/8 in - 16 threaded rods (5) in the cylinder head through the holes for the clamp. Install 3/8 in nuts and washers (4) on rods (5).
Illustration 3. Location of components.4. Turn nuts (4) down evenly on both sides while holding tappet assembly (6) in the up position as spring (10) is being compressed. Hold tappet assembly (6) in the up position with a suitable tool placed through the spring coils and under tappet retainer pin (9).
Illustration 4. Location of components.5. Remove keepers (7) and carefully loosen compression plate (3). The tappet assembly should only move as far as tappet retainer pin (9) allows. Remove retainer (8).6. Install new spring (10). Install retainer (8). Use a suitable tool, placed through the coils of the spring to raise tappet assembly (6) to its highest position. Use compression plate (3) to compress the new spring and install spring retainers (7). Be sure that the spring is installed with the dampening coil down. The blue painted coils are at the opposite end of the spring from the dampening coil.7. Use the procedures and specifications in the Service Manual to install injector clamp (2) and install the rocker arms.8. Repeat this procedure for the remaining cylinders.9. Use the procedures and specifications in the Service Manual to set the bridge and valve clearances as well as the injector timing.
