The displacement of the engine is 12.5 L (763 cu in). Each cylinder has two inlet valves and two exhaust valves. The firing sequence of the engine is 1-5-3-6-2-4.The Mechanical Electronic Unit Injector (MEUI) provides increased control of the timing and increased control of the fuel air mixture. Engine rpm is controlled by adjusting the injection duration. Engine timing is controlled by the precise control of fuel injection timing. The Electronic Control Module (ECM) monitors the components of the engine during operation. In the event of a component failure, the operator will be alerted to the condition by the use of an amber warning lamp and an event code will be logged in the ECM. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) can be connected to the engine in order to read any logged faults.Starting The Engine
The engines ECM will automatically provide the correct amount of fuel in order to start the engine. Do not hold the throttle down while the engine is cranking. If the engine fails to start in 30 seconds, release the starting switch. Allow the starting motor to cool for two minutes before the starting motor is used again.
Excessive ether (starting fluid) can cause piston and ring damage. Use ether for cold weather starting purposes only.
Cold Mode Operation
Starting the engine and operation in cold weather is dependent on the type of fuel used, the oil viscosity, and other optional starting aids. For more information, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cold Weather Operation".The Cold Mode flag in Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) indicates that the engine system is compensating with a cold mode strategy. Some examples of a cold mode strategy may include:
Elevated RPM
Timing enhancements
Fuel injection enhancementsTroubleshooting performance-related problems when the Cold Mode flag is active is not recommended. The Cold Mode flag will activate in the following conditions:
Coolant temperature is less than 35° C (95° F)
Coolant temperature is less than 75° C (167° F) and NRS gas temperature is less than 35° C (95° F)
Coolant temperature is greater than 75° C (167° F) and NRS gas temperature is less than 65° C (149° F)Once coolant temperature is above 75° C (167° F) and NRS gas temperature is greater than 65° C (149° F) for 10 minutes, no cold mode strategy will be active. Customer Specified Parameters
The engine can be programmed for several customer specified parameters. For a brief explanation of each of the customer specified parameters, see the Operation and Maintenance Manual.
