(5EK) Truck EngineDescription of Change: Test data indicates that the rocker arm and camshaft load limits were being exceeded during severe truck operations. As the result, the compression brake slave piston lash is now factory set to a lower value. By reducing the slave piston lash setting, the rocker arm and camshaft loads will remain within their design limits. Adaptable To: The new compression brake slave piston lash factory setting of 0.686 mm (.0270 in) is a direct replacement for the former factory setting of 0.762 mm (.0300 in). The new setting is effective with the 3406E (5EK43821-Up) Truck Engine. The initial engine intake and exhaust valve lash adjustment is recommended between 15,000 and 60,000 miles (24 000 and 96 000 km) or between the first and fourth oil change. During the initial valve lash adjustment, for 435 and higher horsepower engines, Jake Brake performance can be optimized by setting the slave piston lash to 0.762 mm (.0300 in). During the initial valve lash adjustment for 410 and lower horsepower engines, the Jake Brake setting remains the same as the new factory setting [0.686 mm (.0270 in)]. During all valve lash adjustments, the Jake Brake slave piston lash must be checked and reset if required.
