Information:
4. Check the EMS for correct operation. See the subject "Electronic Monitoring System (EMS)" in the Monitoring Systems and Cab Features" topic. 5. Turn the start switch to the START position. As soon as the engine starts release the switch. Allow the engine to operate at low idle.
Do not crank the engine for more than thirty seconds. Allow two minutes for the starter motor to cool before cranking again.
Starting Below 0° C (+32° F)
Inject starting aid (ether) only while cranking the engine, or after initial startup, until the engine is running smoothly.Use ether sparingly. Excessive ether without cranking can cause piston and ring damage.Wait approximately two seconds before injecting again.Use ether for cold starting purposes only. After every thirty seconds of engine cranking, allow two minutes for the starter motor to cool before cranking again.
1. Follow steps 1 through 4 for "Starting Above 0° C (+32° F)."2. Push the cold start switch and hold for three seconds. With the cold start switch held down, turn the ignition switch to the START position. When cranking begins, release the cold start switch. Ether is injected when the switch is released.3. Operate the cold start switch every two seconds while cranking the engine. Continue to use the switch until the engine starts and is running smoothly.4. Release the start switch when the engine starts.Allow the engine to warm up at low idle for several minutes. The actual time depends on the outside temperature. Use this time to help warm up of the hydraulic oil by holding the hoist control in the 'Lower' position with the body fully lowered. For starting below -18° C (0° F), use of optional cold weather starting aids is recommended. A coolant heater, fuel heater, jacket water heater or extra battery capacity may be required. At temperatures below -23° C (-10° F), consult your Caterpillar dealer, or refer to the "Operation and Maintenance Manual" for "Cold Weather Recommendations", form SEBU 5898, available from your Caterpillar dealer.Starting with Jumper Cables
Batteries give off flammable fumes that can explode.Prevent sparks near the batteries. They could cause vapors to explode. Do not allow jump cable ends to contact each other or the machine.Do not smoke when checking battery electrolyte levels.Electrolyte is an acid and can cause personal injury if it contacts skin or eyes.Always wear eye protection when starting a machine with jump cables.Improper jump procedures can cause an explosion resulting in personal injury.Always connect battery positive(+) to battery positive(+) and battery negative(-) to battery negative(-).Jump only with a battery source and with the same voltage as the stalled machine.Turn off all lights and accessories on the stalled machine. Otherwise they will operate when the jump source is connected.
When starting from another machine, make sure the machines do not touch. This could prevent damage to engine bearings and electrical circuits.Turn on (close) the disconnect switch prior to the boost connection to prevent damage to electrical components on the stalled machine.
Machines with Auxiliary Start Receptacles
Some Caterpillar products may be equipped with auxiliary start receptacles as
