Walk-Around Inspection
Inspect Engine
1. Make sure lines are properly clamped and tight. Check for loose fittings or leaks.2. All guards must be in place. Repair or replace missing or damaged guards.3. Disconnect any battery chargers that are not protected against the starter current drain. Check condition of batteries and the level of electrolyte.4. Check for coolant, fuel or oil leaks on or below engine.5. Check condition of all belts. Replace if necessary.6. Check condition of gauges. Replace if cracked or if gauges can not be calibrated to zero ("0").Air Cleaner
Check Air Cleaner Indicator
Service the air cleaners with the engine stopped.
Change the air cleaner elements when the indicator diaphragm (1) enters the red zone (2). Refer to the vehicle manufacturer's maintenance manual for procedure to change the air cleaner elements.Radiator
Check Coolant Level
At operating temperature, engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Check coolant level only when engine is stopped and radiator filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove radiator filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.
Typical Example1. Remove the radiator filler cap slowly to relieve pressure. Inspect condition of cap gasket. Replace cap if necessary.2. Maintain coolant level to the bottom of the filler tube. Install the radiator filler cap.3. Inspect for leaks or damaged hoses. Make repairs if necessary.Clean Outside of Folded Core Radiator
Pressure air can cause personal injury.When using pressure air for cleaning, wear a protective face shield, protective clothing and protective shoes.The maximum air pressure must be below 205 kPa (30 psi) for cleaning purposes.
Compressed air, high pressure water or steam can be used to remove dust, leaves and general debris from a folded core radiator. Clean as required by condition of radiator.The use of compressed air is preferred.Refer to "Know Your Cooling System," Form SEBD0518, for the complete procedure and instructions.Engine Crankcase
Measure Oil Level
1. Measure engine oil level. 2. Maintain oil level to FULL mark on the ENGINE STOPPED side of dipstick. Add oil if necessary.Fuel Tank
Drain Water and Sediment
Open drain valve. Allow water and sediment to drain into a container. Close drain valve. Wipe up spills. The fuel tank drain valve on your vehicle may be different than the one shown above.
