SAFETY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR FLASHING NEW TRANSMISSION/CHASSIS SOFTWARE ON CERTAIN 120M, 12M, 140M, 160M, 14M, 16M, AND 24M MOTOR GRADERS

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:
This Product Improvement Program supersedes the Product Improvement Program dated 18Apr2008.
Installation of the New Electronic Control Module software is required on the products listed below. This new software addresses the following events.
1) A modification has been made to the steering software reducing the potential for delays in the activation of secondary steering. These possible delays could result in a temporary loss of steering control during specific faults. This change is only effective when machines are traveling at or below nine kilometers per hour.
2) During transmission calibration, the machine may experience a rocking type motion as the various clutches engage.
3) The transmission control software needs to be updated. With the existing transmission software, during rapid transmission directional shifts in certain situations the machine's selected direction of travel may not match the actual direction of travel for up to two seconds.
4) A modification has been made to the steering software to reduce the potential for a failure mode that could result in loss of steering when steering near the physical stops on the axle. This change is only effective when machines are traveling at or below nine kilometers per hour.
5) A modification has been made to the steering software to reduce the potential for a failure mode that could result in uncommanded steering when the engine is being cranked during machine start. This change is only effective when the machine is stationary (zero machine speed).
6) In addition to the improvements mentioned above, the new software will reduce the time required for directional shifts. This improvement permits the Operator to perform directional shifting while in 4th reverse gear during certain conditions, by eliminating the need for additional down shifting before the actual shift and directional change occurs.
Certain machines already contain the improvements that address Event #1, Event #2, and Event #6 but still require the software updates to address Event #3, Event #4 and Event#5. Any of the above events could result in personal injury or death.
Certain machines also require the installation of a switch cover over the parking brake switch located in the cab.
