Special Instruction Form SMHS8543 gives complete instruction for installing the 8Z7065 Field Conversion Group (Oil Steering Clutches And Brakes) to convert a standard machine to the 8Z7140 Custom Shop Modification (Oil Steering Clutches And Brakes).
With oil cooled steering clutches and brakes, it may be necessary to make two or three brake adjustments in the first 500 hours of operation. During the early hours of a machine's life, there is a break-in period where the brake band wears to conform to the drum diameter. As the band wears, the pedal travel increases and finally reaches a point where the band is only in slight contact with the drum. At this point, the operator complains that the machine fails to turn or has jerky steering as he applies more force to pedals in an effort to steer machine. A brake adjustment will solve this complaint because it will tighten the brake band and restore correct pedal travel. To reduce pedal effort requirements, it is important to keep all parts of the steering clutch and brake control linkage well lubricated. This includes the parts of the linkage that are under the dash and under the floor plates. A spray-on type lubricant can be used to lubricate the linkage.
The mechanical advantage of the linkage on machines equipped with the former CSM can be increased by installing the parts listed in Chart B and shown in Illustration 1. When used together, these parts are direct replacements for the former parts.
Illustration 1. Location of parts. Two improvements have been made to the new 8Z7140 Custom Shop Modification (Oil Steering Clutches And Brakes) since it went into production. Both of these changes were made to reduce the pedal effort requirements for turning and braking.
The first improvement to the new CSM was to replace the two 2M8340 Rod Ends with 6F7010 Rod Ends. Replacing these rod ends prevents possible linkage interference that could limit pedal travel. The effective product identification numbers for the rod end change are shown in Chart C. The new 6F7010 Rod Ends are direct replacements for the former 2M8340 Rod Ends. See Illustration 2 for rod end location.
The latest change to the new CSM to reduce pedal effort requirements was to replace the 4M4014 Spring (control linkage return spring) with a lighter 9H6700 Spring. The effective product identification numbers for the spring change are shown in Chart D. The new 9H6700 Spring is a direct replacement for the former 4M4014 Spring. See Illustration 2 for spring location.
Illustration 2. Location of rod ends and springs. The procedure to adjust the brakes and brake linkage on all D3B Tractors and 931B Loaders equipped with oil steering clutches and brakes is as follows:
The brakes must be in the release position when adjustments are made.1. Disconnect rod (1) by removing the key and pin from one end of the rod.2. Make adjustments to the length of four rods (3) to get a dimension of 422.0 mm (16.61") between centers of pins.3. Make adjustments to the length of rod (5)
