Rework Procedure
3500 Machine engines may have loose1/4-inch pipe plugs in the flywheel housing. Torque tooling used to tightenthe 1/4-inch pipe plugs in machine engine flywheel housings failed, resultingin low torque applied to the plug. These pipe plugs are used to seal cross-drilledoil passages that feed the rear mounted auxiliary drives. Failure of theseplugs could result in damaged to any or all of the following: auxiliarydrives, engine, torque converter, transmission.
There are four 1/4-inch plugs located on the outsideof the flywheel housing and one behind the flywheel. Inspect the four externalplugs.
If they are tight no further action required.
If they are loose remove flywheel and tightenall five plugs to 20 Nm/15 ft-lb.
To assess loose or tight: Apply 10 Nm torque inthe tightening direction. If it moves the plug is considered loose, nomovement indicates it is tight.
