8W-8138 Shaft input shaft may fail on the machines listed above. Failure of the input shaft is due to excessive wear of the internal splines which results in loss of all hydraulic function and transmission function. The tractor engine will still operate but the machine will be unable to move.Solution

(1) 8W-8138 ShaftCaterpillar is aware of this problem and is recommending the following interim corrective solution. In the event of failure, replace the failed 8W-8138 Shaft with an updated 8W-8138 Shaft that has increased the hardness of the internal splines.The internal splines in the updated 8W-8138 Shaft have increased hardness from Rockwell hardness C 45-50 to Rockwell hardness C 50-55.
