Turbocharger (1), Crankcase Breather (2), Aftercooler (3), Centrifugal Oil Filters (4), Oil Filler and Dipstick (5), Governor (6), Oil Filters (7), Fuel Filters (8), Oil Cooler Regulator Housing (9), Jacket Water Pump (10), Separate Circuit Water Pump (11), Damper (12), Jacket Water Outlet (13), Fuel Transfer Pump (14), Crankcase Expolsion Relief Valves (15), Barring Device (Not Shown) and Air or Electric Starting Motors (Not Shown).Engine Information
Caterpillar 3606 and 3608 engines are turbocharged and aftercooled with direct fuel injection. The engines are an inherently balanced (no special balancing gears required) In-line block design with 280 mm (11 in) bore, 300 mm (11.8 in) stroke, and a compression ratio of 13:1. The engines are available at different engine ratings to fit various applications. These ratings vary between 900 and 1000 rpm. These engine ratings are available with SAE standard rotation counterclockwise (CCW when viewed from rear of engine), or SAE reverse rotation clockwise (CW when viewed from rear of engine). The engine may be equipped with traditional locomotive type hydro-mechanical governing systems or optional complete electronic control systems. The complete electronic systems operate on power supplies ranging from 64 to 110 VDC and can be configured to provide air-fuel ratio control, torque limiting, altitude derate, wheel slip, excitation control, etc. These electronic systems also provide on-board diagnostics and are used in association with various Woodward or Heinzmann fuel rack actuators.
Hydro-mechanical (PGEV) GovernorThe hydro-mechanical governing systems use a traditional Woodward PGEV locomotive governor which can be configured to operate on power supplies also ranging from 64 to 110 VDC for eight or 16 notch controllers.
Electric (EGB-P) GovernorElectronically controlled engines may include a Woodward EGB-P or UA type electrically controlled, proportional output actuator with magnetic engine speed pickups. These systems respond to control signals from the electronic governor and actuate the engine fuel control linkage to maintain desired engine speed and generator power.Electronically controlled engines may also include an adhesion control system that inhibits wheel slip by regulating power just enough to abate wheel slip and then immediately ramp up power at controlled rate rather than dumping all power from the traction generator before ramp up.The result is a controlled wheel creep that maximizes power transmission from the wheel to the rail. This is a major feature that most present mechanically controlled locomotive type governors do not have.Mechanically controlled engines include Woodward PGEV hydromechanical type governors. This system features electro-hydraulic speed setting for remote control of engine speed and mechanical-hydraulic load control for automatic regulation of engine load to maintain a specific power output at each notch setting. Maintaining a constant engine speed does not mean that the locomotive road speed will be constant. The engine is also equipped with auxiliary features and devices for automatic shutdowns and alarms, load control and fuel limiter.Individual unit injection pumps, (one for each cylinder), meter and pump fuel under high pressure to an integral injection nozzle for each cylinder. The engine lubricating oil, which is both cooled and filtered, is supplied by a gear
