Remove the recoil springs. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Recoil Spring - Remove and Install".

Sudden release of spring force can cause injury.To prevent the possibility of injury, follow the procedure to relieve the spring pressure.

Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the recoil spring. The weight of the recoil spring is 72 kg (160 lb).
Put the recoil spring in position between plates (2) and (3) .
Remove the hoist.
Put the center of spring pilot (4) and pilot assembly (5) in alignment with the centers of plates (2) and (3) .
Move the hydraulic cylinder enough to hold the recoil spring in position.
Make an adjustment to nuts (6) so that the distance between plates (2) and (3) are equal at each of three legs (7) .
Turn nuts (8) until there is a distance of 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) between nuts (8) and plate (9) .Note: The distance between plates (2) and (3) must be equal at all times. This will prevent the spring from twisting and coming out of tool (A) .

Put spring (1) under enough compression in order to remove nut (10). Remove nut (10) .
Slowly release the compression on spring (1) .
Turn nuts (6) and move plate (9) away from spring (1) .
Put spring (1) under compression. Turn nuts (8) until the nuts are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) from plate (9). Slowly release the compression on spring (1) .
Repeat Steps 9 through 11 until spring (1) is not under compression.
Disconnect tool (A) from the recoil spring.
Attach an appropriate lifting device and a hoist to the recoil spring. Remove the recoil spring from tool (A). The weight of the recoil spring is 72 kg (160 lb).
Remove spring pilot (4) and pilot assembly (5) .
Remove sleeve (11) and bolt (12) .
