Introduction
Nearly all dozer and ripper spherical bearing joints now use shims. The shims allow for adjustment of the bearing clearance. The shims can be removed throughout the life of the joint to compensate for wear. This results in increased bearing life and a tight fitting joint. Each spherical plain bearing joint has two bolt together halves. For each half the maximum number of shims required is 14. For each new joint (two halves), 28 shims is the most that will be required. When replacing one half of any joint, please obtain 14 shims. The charts provide a cross reference of the correct shim for each spherical bearing. When assembling the joints, use the shims as required to maintain a minimum bearing clearance of .25 mm (.010 in). Use the following procedure to assemble the joints. It is absolutely necessary to maintain a minimum bearing clearance of .25 mm (.010 in) after assembly is complete. Failure to maintain this clearance will result in damaged parts and possible broken bolts.Spherical Bearing Joint Assembly Procedure
1. Remove all the shims from the assembly.
Spherical Bearing Joint
(1) Bearing. (2) Trunnion. (3) Shims. (4) Cap. Shim space (A) and (B).2. Install bearing (1) and cap (4) on trunnion (2) without shims. Tighten the bolts until snug (do not torque). Maintain equal distance on both sides of the cap while tightening the bolts. Be careful not to deform the cap.3. Insert as many shims (3) as possible into spaces (A) and (B) between the cap and the bearing.4. Add two additional shims to the total shims used.5. Install half the shims at (A) and the other half at (B). If the number of shims determined in steps (3) and (4) is odd, then one side will have one more shim than the other. Tighten the bolts to the proper torque and check the joint for free operation before use.6. This allows the assembly to move on the trunnion freely and within the specified tolerance.
